1st Post of 2009!

January 11, 2009

Good grief! I didn’t realize I hadn’t posted for so long! Not that I’ve been lazy or anything. Christmas and New Years got over with and it started doing some organizing and cleaning. Yesterday we even worked on some much needed projects to actually “finish” the house. It’s so dumb how we let all those little things (caulk, paint touch up, tile kickplates, etc) not get finished. We’ve been in this house for over a year now and it’s just ridiculus! Anyway we’re trying to do a couple little jobs each week this winter so we can concentrate on the garden and yard this spring.

I am so looking forward to having a garden again! It’s been 3 years and I’ve really missed it. I’m going to start my own seeds again this year and have been making plans with the seed catalogs. I just have to remind myself to be careful not to do too much!

I didn’t really make any new year’s resolutions this year. When I have in the past I seem to just get depressed because I didn’t follow through. Not that I don’t have some ideas about things I’d like to change or do, but I try to look at them as ongoing and not just new for the year.

I never did post any pictures of our Christmas. It was a nice day and very calm and relaxed. The only visit we had was from Grandpa Stoddard and Uncle Ben. We got a Wii which kept everyone entertained. Everyone was really spoiled with everything they got! Later that day we all went outside so the kids could play and Dave and I could try and keep up with the snow. The snow that day was great and actually wet enough for a change so the kids could make snowmen.

Let It Snow … And Blow!

December 22, 2008

It’s been snowing like crazy today and then the wind started to blow. At this point we are officially snowed in. Or at least until we can get the snowblower going to get us out. Actually I wouldn’t mind being really, really snowed in! I wouldn’t have to go to work and could just hang out at home. Guess we’ll have to see what it’s like in the morning.

Our special dinner on Sunday was really nice. We ate by candlelight and talked about our “presents” to Jesus. It actually ended up being kind of a goal setting session with everything talking about things they’d like to improve or do better at. We decided we’d have another dinner at Easter and check up on where everyone was at. We had some yummy pasta with chicken, pesto-parmesean cream sauce, mushrooms, and garlic. (Did my kid’s eat it…NO… they just had plain noodles with butter and parmesean cheese – someday hopefully they’ll know what wonderful food experiences they are missing). We also had salad and asparagus and some Martinelli’s sparking apple juice.

I also made 12 cake pans full of cinnamon rolls for neighbor gifts. They are so yummy! I’m glad they turned out so good.

Here’s where I got the recipe http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/pws-cinnamon-rolls1.pdf

I didn’t use as much butter to drizzle on the dough. It made it hard to roll up and it squished out all over. I also didn’t use the coffee or maple in the frosting and used vanilla and more milk instead. Definately a keeper recipe and other than waiting for the dough to raise not really very complicated.

Oh boy – I’ve really gotta start eating better! There’s been way too much of the goodies and stuff going on and I’ve gotten back into some really bad habits!

Is is really Christmas time?

December 20, 2008

Ok – today is December 20th and 5 days away from Christmas. We have snow. I’ve been listening to Christmas music. Watched Polar Express and a couple other Christmas movies. We’ve had some Christmas goodies delivered. We’ve got a few presents under the tree. The house is decorated (thanks to my kids who pretty much did it all). My shopping is done except for a couple of little things I need to pick up at Walmart. But here’s my problem… I’m just not feeling it! I’m starting to wonder if something’s wrong with me. I’m feeling like that song “Where Are You Christmas” by Faith Hill. This time of year usually sneaks up on me, but this year it really has. I hope my Christmas spirit kicks into gear in the next couple of days. Right now I’m just feeling kind of blah I guess. I was reading a couple of blogs and seeing what other families are doing. Don’t ask me what the heck we’ve been doing, but it seems like we haven’t been home for like two weeks and I feel exhausted. We haven’t done any warm cozy homey things really, other than decorate the tree.

Every year just before Christmas we have a “special dinner”. We cook something yummy and eat on my special dishes by candlelight and talk about the real meaning of Christmas. I had an idea this year of celebrating Jesus’s birthday with a cake and “presents”. The idea about the presents is to not give an actual present but something you would give to the Savior like reading your scriptures daily, do an act of service for someone, or something like that. We’ll try that this year at our dinner Sunday night and see how it turns out. Hopefully Christmas will come to me then! I’ll let you know how our dinner turns out.

How about the rest of you? Anything you do to help get yourself in the Christmas spirit?

Here’s a picture of our tree and Dave out working on shoveling the snow. It was pretty today, but cold.
